Maybe David Bowie was on to something. Personally, I've always felt my life connected a little more with Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, or George Jones. But Bowie's lyrics seem to fit my current situation like a glove.
Every aspect of my life, both professional and personal, has changed in the last 6 months. As is always the case, change is difficult. It's challenging. It's scary, stressful, and filled with uncertainty. One major change in one's life can be overwhelming, but multiple major changes can be too much to overcome.
Luckily, I'm stubbor.....uh....... DETERMINED! The purpose of change, at least changes we make of our own free will through decisions and not those imposed upon us by fate, is usually to make things better in one aspect or another. Such is the case with all of the changes my family and I have made in our personal lives, as well as with the changes President Howard and are making at WVMP.
Think of the monstrous undertaking it is to relocate your business to a location that greatly increases your business, yet working with a fraction of the tools and space you are accustomed to having at your disposal. The time consuming task of trying to build your family a new home, all the while dealing with constant issues and holdups from surveyors, townships, government agencies, and this year particularly, weather. Throw in a seasonal business (WVMP) that is demanding of ones attention and time year round, but very intensely during it's operational period. Just for good measure, add a new scoring system and a few strong storms to cause damage and even more work and financial stress.
Then, let's not forget moving a 9 year old racer from karts to a slingshot (no small change), trying to make sure yoiur family is coping with the stress of moving, changing schools, leaving behind lifelong friends, and facing the challenge of making new ones. Oh, and my favorite part, moving everything you own back into your new home and landscaping... Y'all, Big Willy ain't got no green thumb!
Before yoiur get the wrong idea, I point this out not to complain, but quite the opposite. While it is enough to make even Big Willy's shoulders tremble under the weight, I can see the vision. I see the light! All of these changes WILL lead to better things. My business has already shown greater profits with less hours locked inside my office. Despite a struggling economy and ridiculous gas prices, we HAVE seen car counts above last years average both of our first two events. The improvements we have made at the track have helped, and those we want to get done are getting done a little at a time. The racing has been very good, tire wear excellent, and there has been for the most part, an air of peace and harmony (not something often found at a race track). Our home is entering the final stages of completion, at least to the point of occupancy. Once this occurs, progress for Big Willy will accelerate faster than Tittle chasing a deep fried oreo! That has been one of my biggest hurdles this spring. It was intended that living so very close to the track would allow more time nights after work to get things done. Circumstances have prevented that so far, and instead of being at least as close as we were in the past (6 miles), this spring we have been faced with a drive of 15 miles.
Many racers notice our effort, and express gratitude for it. Many show it through their support of the track, by competing or attending. Despite all of the recent stress, in an odd way, I feel relaxed. I've been able to sort out in my mind what issues really are important, and which ones are not such big deals. I think the changes have made our family stronger and more understanding. My vision of what I've tried to accomplish feels much closer and attainable now than ever before.
And I, by the Grace of God, will CONTINUE to work tirelessly to make things better for ALL family, racers, friends, and creatures (except for the skunks that tip over the trash cans and the woodchuck in our soon to be new lawn) for ALL ETERNITY as I AM BIG WILLY!!! FEEL MY
